Pre-Conferences

All Pre-Conferences are scheduled Wednesday, February 14, 2024, 8:00 am -4:30 pm   Note: ‘Bootcamp’ and ‘Let’s Get Moving’ Preconferences have been cancelled

The goal of this preconference course will be to demonstrate and practice application of the Clinical Practice Guideline in a living laboratory setting with people with PD (PwPD). Parkinson Disease is the fastest growing neurological disorder, with a prevalence that is expected to grow to 12 million people worldwide by 2050. The APTA established a Guideline Development Group that published a Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) in 2021. The purpose was to standardize practice using best available evidence. To facilitate dissemination and implementation of this CPG, a Knowledge Translation Task Force was created in 2021. This course will be a lab-based learning experience for clinicians to creatively apply the CPG action statements alongside taskforce members and PwPD. The focus of this course will be implementing the CPG action statements within all treatment environments focusing on clinics with minimal equipment. This course will strive to overcome barriers to implementation by helping clinicians across practice settings apply the action statements in the CPG for people with PD. This session will review the guideline, knowledge/attitudes/behaviors regarding the guideline, and implementation strategies to overcome identified barriers. ANPT knowledge translation tools will be reviewed in an active learning lab including higher, moderate, and lower-level PD patients.

Retaining or relearning the ability to perform a safe and timely floor transfer is an essential part of falls preparedness training. Inability to rise from the floor is associated with history of falls, fear of falling, frailty, and mobility disability. Not only does the ability to rise from the floor assist in the fall recovery, but it is also an important functional mobility component that demonstrates retention of high-level strength, flexibility, coordination, and balance required for participation activity, exercise and tasks occurring in daily life. This one-day pre-conference will assist physical therapy professionals in understanding the importance of falls preparedness; the use of floor transfers in examination, evaluation, and interventions strategies; the creation of an evidence-informed plan of care; and proper exercise dosing for floor transfers across the spectrum of movement ability. Application of this content across three very different case studies will be integrated throughout the content as well as ample opportunity for lab, group discussion, and self-reflection of skills, abilities, and biases that would impact the success of this information.
